The Dynamics Of Teamwork

Teamwork! A value that is instilled in many people early on in this thing called life. It is presented as a necessity needed to navigate through many obstacles that life has waiting in the background for us humans. Sayings such as "Two heads are better than one." or "You can accomplish more together than you can individually." grace the ears of our youth on a daily basis. Simple concept I think. Pretty direct and to the point. It is absolutely much easier if two people carry a couch down a flight of stairs instead of one person creating a hernia for themselves. There is no doubt about that. While the concept is simple to grasp, the execution can prove to be a bit more challenging. Attempting to gather several individuals whom all have different values, political views, work ethics, relationship views & opinions to name a few can prove to be a daunting task. From professional sports down to the working sector, the quest to piece together the perfect team is one that haunts individuals in power on a daily basis. What makes creating a good team such a tough task? Let's take a look at a few aspects of what is involved in teamwork and see what we come up with!

Teammates

Selecting the right teammates is not only the first task on the list but critical to the success of your team. One bad decision here will sabotage your chances of the success from the jump. While many people recognize how critical this step is, we seem not to use much discretion while teammate shopping. This pertains to business and personal life. While dating you are essentially in the draft for a teammate.  Just like in professional sports, you had a meeting with your board a.k.a. your friends and family and discussed what you want in a dating prospect. A couple of those people have made suggestions about people they may know who you can draft. You ask for the scouting report on the prospect and they give you a run down on their job, looks, and martial status. From there you decide if they are going on the draft board or not. You then take these prospects to the combine a.k.a your first date so that you can see how they perform in different scenarios. This is where it can get tricky because the prospect who performed best is not the one that always gets drafted.  Many times we draft the prospect with the most appeal who is not always the prospect with the most talent or skill. The prospect with the best smile or who has abs if you are a woman. As a man maybe its the prospect with the best ass or who has the cutest face. In business it could be the prospect who graduated from your university or worked for one of your favorite brands. Regardless of the attributes you used to choose the prospect, if you didn't stick to what you laid down as parameters in the pre draft meeting and go with your emotions instead, you will likely find yourself missing your mark in what you wanted as a teammate. Emotions Will Get You Broke!

Teamwork

So you completed the team and you have your new teammate(s). You are happy with your selection, but you have some doubt if you have chosen the correct teammates. It's been fun getting to know your new crew, but now it is time to work as a team. You soon come to realize, this is not going as expected. Your values are completely opposite of each other, your work ethics are not in sync and your communication styles are worlds apart. How did you get here? Choices! Poor choices have plagued humanity since the beginning of time. Adam biting the apple, thinking the Titanic was unsinkable and Destiny's Child allowing Beyonce' to do a solo album. Don't let these poor choices destroy your chances of winning with your team. Figure Out How To Figure It Out! Observe what issues you are having with your team, regret (you have to spend a little time on regret LOL), regroup, retool and restart your teamwork scenario. Have a meeting with your teammates and address the issues you have noticed and listen to their feedback. You now have the tools to hopefully get your team situation back on the up and up.

Success

So you have made it! You and your team have successfully accomplished the task you came together for. Everybody is feeling good after all the hard work and everyone is looking forward to the next challenge. At this point, you as the leader, should be in cruise control. Unfortunately, the challenge is just starting. With success comes successful people. With successful people comes egos. Everyone is the most important player on the team now. Everyone feels that without their contribution, the previous project would not have been what it turned out to be. So once again you find yourself managing personalities except these personalities have big egos. At this point you have a crucial decision to make. You can get Ice Cold and dismantle the team and let the chips fall where they may during the rebuilding process. Or you can decide It Ain't That Bad and realize There Is Always A Way! How have you handled your past teammates? How will you handle your future teammates? Choices!
