Fear
Factor

Delta
Airlines is in desperate need of damage control lately. A number of
instances have occurred over the last couple of months….lets
briefly recap:
1. An African American doctor was dismissed by a
flight attendant as not being “qualified” enough to help a
passenger in need.
2. A bombastic Trump supporter received a lifelong
ban from Delta for yelling profanities in support of the
president-elect.

4. A student was kicked off a flight for speaking Arabic to his mother on the phone.
Although
ALL of these incidents can be viewed as questionable,
I want to focus on #4. This is a prime example of a “What Would You
Do” episode. September 11th
has caused the majority of Americans to suffer from a mild case of PTSD.
We may hear others speak different languages on a daily basis, but
the moment the setting is considered vulnerable
we freak out. Its common knowledge that certain buzz words are
prohibited (i.e bomb), but discouraging others to speak in their
native tongue may ride the line of discrimination.

Many are
trying to discredit the incident due to the fact that the “victim”
is a YouTube star who frequently pranks the un-suspecting public.
Nevertheless a discussion is absolutely necessary on said topic. In
an effort to remain progressive we must answer the tough questions:
When will America truly heal? What is the “right” way to handle
these situations? Do we risk the possibility of another 9/11 by
honoring his right to free speech? Or do we learn from precedent and
act on our intuitions (even if it is based on fear)?
Unfortunately
no solution may satisfy every need, but given the frequency of these
events it is becoming more and more apparent that America must find a
way to balance fear & human decency.
