Throughout the years, Denzel Washington was often questioned about why he never kissed White women in his films and eventually the real reason came out. He’s been known to turn down scenes that required him to kiss Julia Roberts and other White female co-stars in the past, while accepting scenes that called for him to kiss his African American co-stars. Denzel had his reasons for stepping away from on-screen kisses with his sistas from another mista.
It had been twenty years (in 1992’s Malcolm X) since Denzel had kissed a White woman on screen until more recently in the 2012 movie, “Flight.” He had his reason for not doing so and it had nothing to do with him disliking White women or anything like that, but it apparently had a lot to do with with his respect for Black women and his disapproval of how Black actresses were all too often not seen as the object of affection when it came to major motion pictures, so he didn’t want to feed into that stereotype.
NYDailyNews reported this about Denzel’s choices to keep his on-screen kisses off limits with his White female co-stars:
Denzel Washington once turned down a love scene with Julia Roberts out of loyalty to his female African-American fans, Allison Samuels reveals in her new book, “Off the Record” (Amistad). Washington nixed the steamy segment even though Roberts insisted that he be cast as her co-star in “The Pelican Brief,” writes Samuels, a respected Newsweek reporter. Washington explained: “Black women are not often seen as objects of desire on film. And they have always been my core audience.”
So to sum it up, Denzel didn’t kiss White women in his movies because he refused to disrespected his core fans by playing into Hollywood’s one-sided view of beauty; and he also empathizes with actresses of All colors because again, he doesn’t agree with Hollywood’s unfair double standards regarding beauty and marketability.
One person who isn’t worried about him kissing Black women, White women, or any other women for that matter, is his beautiful wife of 33 years, Pauletta…Original Author ~ Unknown
Hollow Tip's Thoughts
“All is fair….”

Election season is upon us and America is more polarized than ever. It seems as though 1 out of every 5 citizens are looking for a reason to protest. We’ve seen it in the inner cities, NFL, NBA, (national anthem) singers….and now Hollywood sets. After reading this article I was not sure if I wanted to applaud Denzel for taking a stand OR ignore Denzel as “team too much”.
In an effort to play devil’s advocate…hear me out: While I respect his decision to stand for the “voiceless” part of me believes this may cause the lines to be blurred between politics vs. entertainment. As a young black woman (yes I will ride the term “young” for as long as I can) I love any opportunity to give our population a voice. Especially in Hollywood where we can be overshadowed and downplayed as the sassy co-star or broken single mother…basically any other typecast role that constitutes frequent eye/neck rolling. One may say that Denzel is using his platform to bring light to the very issues that matter to him…which is the basis of the “Land of the Free” versus others that may say Denzel can express this liberty while not blatantly disrespecting his fellow peers.
I believe that empathy is a powerful attribute to possess, so I’ll put myself in the shoes of Julia Roberts. Case in point: Although I am an accomplished actress I am overtly excited to play alongside Denzel Washington. As a matter of fact I deliberately request for him to be cast in the film. I’ve got my lines down packed and have come to terms with the much anticipated love scene…only to see that it has been deleted entirely from the film! “WTH?” I shout in my head….I run to the directors to make sure I am not going crazy ONLY to find that Mr. Washington has made an inner pact with himself to avoid kissing white women.
No matter the reasoning I find it hard to believe (while Julia seems clearly supportive) that she did not feel slighted in a sense. Some may take it a step further to say that this is just a fragment of what minorities experience (in terms of racism). On the other hand………
